Arts Initiative Tokyo

Elodie Hiryczuk researched the concept of the ‘detached gaze’ in Japanese art, specifically in photography. The concept refers to the Japanese phrase ‘riken no ken’, which means to look in an unbiased or detached way. This way of observing is free from identification and romance. Hiryczuk also wanted to understand ‘Ma’ or ‘in between’: the pure, essential between all things.
